The Visit of 'Abdu'l-Baha to Salt Lake City

Abbas Effendi (photo left in 1868) was the eldest Son of Baha'u'llah. He took the name-title of 'Abdu'l-Baha (awb-dull baw-HAW); which means in Arabic "Servant of Glory". He was born in 1844, the year that William Miller believed that Jesus was returning to this world.

Assadullah, the personal secretary of 'Abdu'l-Baha (awb-dull baw-HAW) wrote of Him:

"He is the Son of God, the only Door, the Lord of Mankind!" (Assadullah, Sacred Mysteries, p.74)
'Abdu'l-Baha was a Man Who was never known to be angry. He was never known to be dishonest. He was the "Mother Teresa" of His day; famous in Europe and America among the Intelligencia; because of His teachings. He taught the following:

*Men and women are equal in the sight of God, and women should be allowed to vote and to work at jobs men do and be paid the same amount.

*Russia will become Communist (Russia was not Communist until 1917) and prove a threat to the world for several generations.

*The races are equal in the sight of God, and the Negro is not black-skinned because of any curse of God, but because they lived for thousands of years where the rays of the Sun are strongest. A black skin is a protection from the rays of the Sun; not a sign of any curse from God. NOTE: Mormon leaders taught from 1848 until 1978 that Negroes were the children of Cain, under the Curse of Cain, and a black skin was the "mark" of the curse of Cain. The Church no longer teaches the Curse of Cain Doctrine, and in fact now denies the Church ever taugh it.

*Mankind should think of itself as one family, and should form a league of nations to rid itself of armaments, and to use the money spent on arms to feed the hungry and allieviate the suffering of the poor.

*Resurrection is not of the physical body, but of the heavenly form (ethereal body) which is released at death like a bird from a cage.

*Heaven and Hell are not geographic locations, but are inner conditions of our own souls that manifest themselves in the Afterlife.

*There is no unending eternal Hell; all souls will have an opportunity to progress in the Afterlife.

*Prayers of the living for the dead have a positive effect upon the dead in the Unseen World.

*Baptism was an outward sign of an inward truth, but this ritual is no longer necessary; all that is necessary for salvation is the Baptism of the Fire of the Love of God.

*The more we suffer in this life, the less we will have to suffer in the Afterlife.

*Jesus was born of a real and literal virgin and the Holy Spirit (the Father). NOTE: Mormon leaders taught at the time (1912) that God the Father was a resurrected white man who "came down" and had physical relations with Mary, His spirit-daughter, in order to produce the body of Jesus; that Heavenly Father "begot" Jesus with Mary in the exact same manner that any man begets a son with a woman. This "Heavenly Incest" doctrine was taught until 1972, but is no longer openly taught by Mormon leaders. But The Book of Mormon calls Mary a "virgin" before and after Jesus is conceived and born (1 Nephi 11:20).

*Jesus was the very Saviour of Man, and we are to look to Him for personal salvation.

*He ('Abdu'l-Baha) was not Christ returned! "Christ" refers to the Father (The Spirit of Truth) Who dwelt "in" Jesus 2,000 years ago. The Father (Spirit of Truth) had now come in the Person of His Father, Baha'u'llah. The LORD told Joseph the Seer:

"Ye were also in the beginning with THE FATHER; that which is Spirit, even THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH." (D&C 93:23)

The LORD said to Joseph the Seer that the Father is "The Spirit of Truth"; a title for the Holy Ghost! (Doctrine & Covenants 93:23).

In the ancient Gospel of the Hebrews (accepted as Scripture by the early Jewish Christians) the Holy Ghost says:

"And it came to pass when the Lord (Jesus) was come up out of the water, the whole fount of the Holy Spirit descended upon him and rested upon him and said to him: My Son, in all the prophets was I waiting for thee that thou shoudest come and I might rest in thee. For thou art my rest; thou art my first-begotten Son that reigneth forever." (New Testament Apocrypha 1:164)
The Holy Ghost is saying to Jesus: "Thou art my rest" (i.e. dwelling place) 2,000 years ago. Jesus Christ was a combination of Two Divine Beings: the Father (Spirit) and the Son (flesh). This is what The Book of Mormon teaches in Mosiah chapter 15! Joseph Smith taught that Jehovah is the Father of Jesus (History of the Church 5:127), not Jesus Himself as the Church now teaches.

When Jesus ascended into heaven on the Mount of Olives, He didn't ascended into the sky, but into a cloud. Two men in white appeared and said to the Disciples: "Ye men of Galilee, why are ye looking up at Him go up into heaven? This same Jesus shall come again in like manner as ye see Him go up into heaven." (Acts 1:9). Christians believe that Jesus will return riding a cloud, or perhaps hanging in the sky on a cloudy day. Baha'is interpret Acts 1:9 to mean that Jesus will return "in a cloud"; meaning a "veil" as a cloud or clouds "veil" (hide/obscure) the Sun. In other words, by "cloud" it means a new body and a new name that will "veil" the Son, and cause only those with spiritual insight (third eye open) to "see" (recognize) Him.

'Abdu'l-Baha was quite famous in His day. In 1911 He travelled to Europe. British Baha'is bought Him a first-class ticked on the "unsinkable" Titanic in order to go to America, but He refused to take that ship. He took another ship. He was a Mustafa (moos-staw-faw): a "Chosen One" with supernatural insight.

In 1912 He toured Canada and the United States. In Montreal Canada He made amazing prophecies that came to pass only a few years after He made them. He predicted the advent of World War I, and the great Spanish Flu epidemic that killed over 50 million people in 1917-1918. At the time He made His prophecies (1912) there were absolutely no "signs" of the coming war in Europe! The Great War started only after Serbian separatists in Bosnia assissinated the Crown Prince of the Austrian-Hungary Empire while he was visiting Bosnia in 1914. Austria-Hungary then declared war on Serbia, and Russia came to the aid of Serbia, and Germany came to the aid of Austria-Hungary, and, because of treaties, Great Britain and France came to the aid of of Russia (at that time it was ruled by the Tsar Nicholas II, the grandson of Queen Victoria).

In Paris He had told the Jews to become Christians; because that would protect them in the future because Europe would soon unite against them and try to exterminate them (this came true in 1943). He called for the end of racism, the establishment of a universal auxiliary language, the elimination of prejudices of all kinds, a new economic system which eliminates the extremes of poverty and wealth. He always testified that Christ was "the very Savior of Man" (Promulgation of Universal Peace, p.62).

In September of 1912, on His way from Chicago to San Francisco, He stopped into Salt Lake City. He knocked on the East Door of the Salt Lake Temple in the red robes of His Father, but was, of course, not allowed to enter.

A Mormon woman named Xorol R. Oliver saw the photo of 'Abdu'l-Baha in The Salt Lake Tribune, and believed that He was Jesus come in a "cloud" (a new body and a new name). She became the first Mormon to become a Baha'i. Months previous to His visit, her deceased mother appeared to Xorol in dreams; telling her that Jesus was soon coming to Salt Lake City "in a cloud". Not "on" a cloud, but "in" a cloud (veil).

In the Book of Acts, first chapter, the Disciples of Jesus are gathered on the top of the Mount of Olives just outside Jerusalem. Jesus appeared to them, then they see Jesus (His ethereal body) in a vision; ascending into a cloud. Two "men" in white appear, and tell the disciples that "this same Jesus whom you have seen go up into heaven will come again in like manner as ye have seen him go up into heaven." (Acts 1:9) From this Christians expect Jesus to return "in a cloud" or perhaps riding a cloud, or perhaps suspended in the sky during a cloudy day over Jerusalem, or every place on earth where a Christian exists (even ships at sea that have Christians on them). This would mean that Jesus would have to "descend" over hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of cities, towns, villages, and ships at sea; anywhere a Christian might be. Other Christians believe that the Lord will come in the a "cloudy sky" but invisible to all but those "raptured" who will fly up into the sky to meet Jesus in a cloudy sky.

Mormons believe that Jesus will come "in a cloud in the sky" perhaps over Jerusalem, perhaps over Salt Lake City, perhaps over Jackson County Missouri; the place they believe that the City of New Jerusalem will be built during the Millennium (1000-year reign of Christ on Earth). Baha'is do not believe that 'Abdu'l-Baha was a Prophet or Manifestation of God. Baha'u'llah referred to Him as "the Mystery of God" and:

"A WORD which God hath adorned with the ornament of His Own Self, and made it Sovereign over the earth and all that is therein." (The World Order of Baha'u'llah, p.135)
The Faith teaches that Prophets are Manifestations of God, the incarnations of the Names and Attributes of God. The Holy Qu'ran, the Holy Book of Islaam, lists 99 Names/Attributes of ALLÁH. The Essence of God does not incarnate, but His Names and Attributes do. They are called "Prophets". They are infallible, and thus do not have ordinary human souls. Their Spirits are the Names/Attributes of ALLÁH. Their Souls are "Chosen Ones".

The Holy Qur'an (Holy Book of Islaam) says that ALLÁH has no son or consort (wife): HE begets not nor is HE begotten. Jesus is not the Son of ALLÁH (the Essence of God)! Jesus is the Son of the Holy Ghost, Who is Jehovah: one of 99 Names/Attributes of ALLÁH. The Arabic name for Jehovah is al-Qayyoom ("The Self-Subsistent"). Baha'u'llah is the Incarnation of Jehovah, the Lord of Hosts! Baha'u'llah is our Heavenly Father!

Besides the Prophets are Seers: ordinary men and women who converse with angels. Seers are fallible humans; as fallible as any other, but they can converse with angels, and make prophecies.

Besides Prophets and Seers is the WORD of God. The WORD has a unique station; that of Mediator between the World of God and the World of Creation. The WORD also sometimes incarnates upon this planet. The Lamb of God refers to 7 Messengers of God beginning with Christ. Perhaps the "24 Elders" who sit upon thrones and worship the Lamb that John sees in vision in the Book of Revelations are the 24 incarnations of the WORD of God?

Baha'is do not believe that human souls can reincarnate on this material planet. Human souls have only one life on this planet. Other mortal probations on other planets is possible; one probation per planet. But the Manifestations of God (the Names/Attributes of God), and the WORD of God can return to this planet; since They do not have ordinary human souls. The Báb taught that He was the "return" of the spirit (Arabic: "ruh") of the Prophet Muhammad, and Mollah Husayn, His first disciple, was the "return" of the soul (Arabic: "nafs") of the Prophet Muhammad. A Prophet has a Spirit (Ruh) and a Soul (Nafs), and They (Spirit and Soul) can "return" as two different individuals! The Spirit (ruh) of a Prophet always returns as a Prophet, but the Soul (nafs), the individuality, of a Prophet returns as an ordinary human being, or perhaps the "WORD". Not all Prophets had the "WORD" as their Nafs (soul). Jesus did.

The Báb taught that He was the "return" of the Imam Mehdi (ee-mom medh-dhee), a young boy who was destined to lead the Shi'ite Muslims, but fell down a well near Qom (khowm), Iran, in 847 A.D. (260 A.H.) while playing. Shi'ite Muslim prophecy said the Imám Mehdi would return in the last days to "restore" the true Faith (i.e. pure sect of Islaam). Quddús, the second disicple of The Báb, also claimed to be the "return" of the Imám Mehdi (see The Dawnbreakers, pp.352-3).

How is this possible? Again, The Báb was the "return" of the Spirit (Ruh) of the Imam Mehdi (ee-mom medh-dee), and Quddús (khud-doos) was the return of the Soul (Nafs) of the Imám Mendi. This is total agreement with Shaykhi doctrine. Baha'u'llah claimed that "the Spirit" (i.e. of Jesus) "returned" in His Person (Gleanings p.101), but He was not the "return" of the Soul (nafs) of Jesus (the WORD of God). The WORD would be Another.

'Abdu'l-Baha taught that Adam truly existed as an historical Man (Note: Adam and Eve may be a reference to the Prophet Aye of Egypt and his wife Khiyah but we do not know). Adam was a Manifestation of God (Major Prophet). 'Abdu'l-Baha also taught that Adam was the "Spirit" (Ruh) of Adam and Eve was the "Soul" (Nafs) of Adam (Some Answered Questions, p.122); in other words, Adam was the "return" of a pre-Adamite Prophet (born about 10,500 B.C. according to the teachings of The Báb) Whose Spirit "returned" as Adam and Whose Soul "returned" as Eve. The Spirit of a Prophet always returns as a Prophet, but the Soul returns as a Mustafa (Arabic: "Chosen One"). John the Baptist was a Prophet and the "return" of the "Perfections" (i.e. Name/Attribute) of Elijah, but not the return of the Soul (individuality) of Elijah. The term "Perfections" and "Qualities" are Shaykhi terms for the "Spirit"; specifically the Spirit of a Prophet.

'Abdu'l-Baha taught that human souls cannot return to this material planet (mortal existences on other material planets is possible), but the Spirits and Souls of the Prophets may return. The Spirit and Soul of a Prophet are the Names/Attributes of God. These Names/Attributes are also called His Perfections, Qualities, or Quiddities. But the individuality of a Prophet is His Soul (Nafs); which never returns as a Prophet. The Imaam Ali (ee-mom awl-lee), the son-in-law and cousin of the Prophet Muhammad, the first of the 12 Imaams of Shi'ite Islaam, claimed to be the "return" of the Soul (Nafs) of Jesus. The Imaam Ali (aw-LEE) declared:

"I am the WORD through Which all things are consummated and through which the Universes are brought into being." (Sermon of the Gulf)
The WORD of God created the Cosmos; both the visible and invisible dimensions. The Imaam Ali was an incarnation of the WORD after Jesus, but not the last incarnation of the WORD! The WORD will incarnate 24 times (Rev. 5:6). The Imaam Ali was not a Prophet, but had a "unique station" between that of Prophet and human being; as did 'Abdu'l-Baha.

Jesus Christ was composed of two Divine Beings in one body: the Spirit of Truth (Holy Spirit) and the WORD of God, which was the "soul" of Jesus. Jesus was the WORD incarnate, and the Holy Spirit entered Him at His baptism. The Spirit of Truth is the Father (D&C 93:23), and the WORD is the Son! He was "the Father and the Son" (Mosiah 15:3, Ether 3:14) in one body. The Book of Mormon teaches this! But would They (the Father and the Son) return in one body, or in TWO?

Lyman Wight, one of the original Mormon apostles, prophesied in 1832 the following:

"And the Spirit fell upon Lyman Wight and he prophesied that there were some in the congregation that should live until the Savior should descend from heaven." (The Life of Joseph Smith the Prophet, p.113)

How many Mormons living in 1832 are still alive today? None. That means that Jesus Christ had to return already, before those living in 1832 were all dead, or the prophecy of Lyman Wight, which Joseph Smith endorsed, was false. If the Faith is true, then Lyman's prophecy was also true! Joseph the Seer said:

"When the Savior shall appear He will appear as a man like ourselves." (Doctrine & Covenants 1:35)

Yet, Mormons do not believe that! They believe that when Jesus returns, He will be "anything but" a "man" like ourselves. We don't fly around in the sky. He will. We age and feel pain and hunger. He will not. We get old and die. He will not. How will Jesus be "a man like ourselves"? But...perhaps He will be just like us!

The LORD said to Joseph the Seer:

"I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God; wherefore, gird up your loans and I will suddenly come to my temple." (D&C 38:8)

"And the Lord shall be red in his apparel like him that treadeth the wine vat;...." (D&C 133:48)

These Verses say that Jesus Christ will come "suddenly" (a Middle English word meaning "unexpectantly") to His Temple in red apparel. Which Temple is meant? The one in Jerusalem? One in Jackson County Missouri? The Salt Lake Temple? Which one?

Brigham Young told the Mormons, in General Conference, in 1857:

"Jesus has been upon the earth a great more times than you are aware of. When Jesus makes his next appearance upon the earth, but few in this church will be prepared to receive him and see him face to face and converse with him, but he will come to his temple." (Brigham Young in the Tabernacle, General Conference, Salt Lake City, 1857, Journal of Discourses 7:142)
In other words, when Jesus came to His Temple, only a "few" of the most spiritual Mormons would be able to recognize Him (i.e. He will come in a "cloud"--a veil).

Mormons still await the "Day" when the Holy Ghost, Whom they believe is a Spirit-Man Who has not yet taken a body, will "come down and get a body" and perform some Great and Holy Mission on Earth. The Baha'is know that that "Day" has already come!
